Mobile Suit Gundam is a Sunrise-produced anime television series. It aired in Japan on the Nagoya Broadcasting Network on April 7, 1979, and ran for 43 episodes until January 26, 1980. It was created and produced by Yoshiyuki Tomino. It was the very first Gundam series, after which countless sequels and spin-offs were created. In 1981, the series was reedited and divided into three films for theatrical release. Yoshikazu Yasuhiko developed the characters, while Kunio Okawara was responsible for the technical designs, including the RX-78-2 Gundam, the titular enormous robot. The release of the first film occurred on February 22, 1981.
