When Pete Short applies for and gets his dream job as a batboy for the New York Empires, he takes a risk for the very first time. It is possible that this will be the last risk he will ever take in his young life. The difficulty is that his mother, Lynne, who raises him alone, is unaware of what he is doing. Up until this point, he's been treated like royalty, while his defiant older sister Betsy has spent their entire lives in the proverbial "doghouse." Mike, Pete's best buddy, goes to the same ultra-conservative Catholic high school that Pete does. Mike has great hopes of making some money off of his friend's newfound prominence in life. As a result of Pete's employment, he is welcomed into a new family that includes Conrad Dean, the team's captain and outstanding third baseman, who also happens to be one of the boy's all-time idols. Conrad Dean assumes the position of an older brother for Pete. Pete's employer, Lou Russo, a rough but fair equipment manager who becomes a much-needed father figure, is also in the clubhouse. Carlos Tavares, a rookie who believes that Pete is his lucky charm, and Jose Marquez, the Empires' territorial head batboy, are also present. Pete is overjoyed to be a part of his favorite club, but he still needs to strike a balance between his life at home and his life in the major leagues as he deals with the ethical conundrums and curve balls that are thrown his way.
