Ichi has a bounty placed on his head, so he decides to seek refuge in one of his favorite villages. Boss Masagoro, the son of a merchant who is reputed to have stolen gold from the shogunate, has taken control of it since his previous visit, and it has been abandoned as a result. Yojimbo has been hired by the boss to serve as his hard-drinking enforcer. However, Yojimbo is not only a spy for the shogunate who is looking for the gold, but he is also in love with Umeno, who is the merchant's unwilling mistress. Ichi is hired on by the merchant to work as a masseuse, and he uses the money from his new employer to buy Umeno's freedom. This causes Yojimbo to feel ashamed, and as a result, he backs out of a deal with Ichi to cause conflict between the two men and their respective gangs. In the midst of the conflict between the two groups, Ichi discovers the gold and initiates the decisive showdowns.
