Paul Benjamin, a writer, is almost hit by a bus when he leaves Auggie Wren's smoke shop. Rashid Cole, a stranger, saves his life, and Paul, a middle-aged man, soon tells Rashid, who is homeless, that he wouldn't mind having him as a temporary housemate.
