In this movie, based on Raymond Carver's stories, a lot of people who aren't very close meet. With her car, waitress Doreen Piggot bumps into a boy. The youngster goes into a coma after the mother walks away. The boy's granddad informs his son Howard about his prior indiscretions when they are both in the hospital. When the family doesn't pick up the boy's birthday cake from the baker, he starts pressuring them.
