Many British people dislike the brash Americans, despite their correct sensibilities, and this is especially true when it comes to the G.I.s making overtures on the lonely British girls. An example of this is the relationship that develops between married John, an Army Captain, and Helen, an aristocratic woman whose navy husband is away fighting in the war.
