Among Sam's grievances is his roommates, whom he finds revolting and who do not appear to share his values of responsibility, privacy, and basic hygine. Given his dissatisfaction with his current residence, Brian reluctantly accepts a proposal to share the use of another apartment: in exchange for two nights per week, he will share the apartment with the owner (a sleazy frat-boy yuppie named Brian, who is soon to be married), and Ellen (a would-be painter looking for a break from her monotonous marriage). Things are going extremely well until Sam and Brian switch nights without informing Ellen, who then blames the "pleasant" things that happen around the apartment on the slob Brian while berating the responsible Sam for his hedonistic lifestyle.
