Among Sam's grievances is his roommates, whom he finds revolting and who do not appear to share his values of responsibility, privacy, and basic hygine. Given his dissatisfaction with his current residence, Brian reluctantly accepts a proposal to share the use of another apartment: in exchange for two nights per week, he will share the apartment with the owner (a sleazy frat-boy yuppie named Brian, who is soon to be married), and Ellen (a would-be painter looking for a break from her monotonous marriage).
