This play, based on the fact-based historical book of the same name, depicts Cromwell's climb to become Henry VIII's closest advisor. England in the 1520s is on the verge of tragedy. If the King dies without a male successor, the country faces civil war. Henry VIII wishes to terminate his twenty-year marriage and marry Anne Boleyn. He is opposed by the Pope and the majority of Europe. In walks Thomas Cromwell, a completely original character, a charmer and a bully, both idealist and opportunist, acute in reading people and unyielding in his goal. But Henry is volatile: compassionate one day, homicidal the next. Cromwell assists him in breaking down the opposition, but what will the cost of his victory be?
