Despite the fact that a television screenplay for the third season had been produced, it was never aired. VHS and DVD versions of the first season were made available. Complete series 1 and 2 were made available on DVD by the BBC in March 2009. Some minor changes were made from the book, such as how the Masters and Tripods look, which were given tentacles in the book; how gravity was increased inside the Golden City, which was not mentioned in the TV show; how "cognoscs," spiritual life forms far superior to the Masters themselves, were introduced; and how there were more main characters, including love interests for Will and Beanpole. There are few female characters in the original texts. He explained this in an interview with Wordcandy, saying it was common for girls to read books with male protagonists but not vice versa at the time of the series' writing. His thoughts on adding a complete family of daughters to the show were also described as "over the top" by him. Non-humanoid aliens, a rarity at the time, also appear in the show.
