The Penguins of Madagascar is a Nickelodeon-aired American CGI animated television series. It stars the penguins Skipper, Kowalski, Private, and Rico from the DreamWorks Animation cartoon picture Madagascar, as well as the lemurs King Julien, Maurice, and Mort and the chimps Mason and Phil. Marlene the otter and Alice, a zookeeper, are new characters to the series. It is the first Nicktoon made in collaboration with DreamWorks Animation. On November 29, 2008, a pilot episode, "Gone in a Flash," premiered as part of "Superstuffed Nicktoons Weekend," and The Penguins of Madagascar became a regular series on March 28, 2009. The series premiere attracted 6.1 million people, breaking the previous record for the most-watched debut. The Penguins of Madagascar does not take place at a specific moment in the franchise, despite occasional allusions to it. McGrath, who also co-created the film characters, has stated that the series takes set in the future "I just wanted them all back in the zoo, neither before or after the movie. It seems to take place in a parallel universe to me."
