An alien spacecraft came crashing down in Emery's little hamlet when she was just six years old. It didn't matter if the Atrians arrived peacefully or not; the humans engaged in a bloody conflict to gain dominance over their new adversaries. An Atrian child who was 6 at the time found his way to a shed behind Emery's house, where she cared for him and gave him food and companionship during the fight. Even after ten years on Earth, the Atrians have become accustomed to their new surroundings, but they remain segregated from the rest of humanity in a camp known as the Sector. The first set of Atrian high school students will now enroll in a human high school in the suburbs to see if human-alien integration is feasible. Both Emery and Roman are surprised to see each other again in a school and community that are deeply suspicious of the Atrian people. Their friendship grows stronger and more deadly as the world around them becomes increasingly hostile and prejudiced.
