Smash is an American musical drama television series developed by Robert Greenblatt for NBC and created by playwright Theresa Rebeck. Steven Spielberg contributed as an executive producer. The series was produced and transmitted by DreamWorks Television and Universal Television in the United States. The series focuses on a fictional New York theater scene and the development of a new Broadway musical. Debra Messing, Jack Davenport, Katharine McPhee, Christian Borle, Megan Hilty, Jeremy Jordan, and Anjelica Huston lead a big ensemble cast. The first season of the show premiered on February6,2012, and concluded on May14, 2012. Its second and last season debuted on February5, 2013 and concluded on May26, 2013. NBC announced a schedule modification in March 2013 and began airing the program on Saturdays beginning April6, 2013. The series was canceled officially on May10, 2013. Josh Safran, the executive producer and showrunner for the second and last season, stated that the season two finale will serve as the series finale should the program not be renewed. The series, particularly the premiere episode, was well received by critics. In addition to four nominations, the first season garnered the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Choreography. Additionally, the series was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Television Series–Musical or Comedy and a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media.
