Quark is an NBC-broadcast American science fiction situation comedy starring Richard Benjamin. The pilot premiered on May 7, 1977, and the series premiered in February 1978 as a midseason replacement. The series' cancellation occurred in April 1978. Buck Henry, co-creator of the spy parody Get Smart, invented Quark. In the year 2226, the setting of the show was a United Galaxy Sanitation Patrol Cruiser, an intergalactic waste scow operating out of United Galaxies Space Station Perma One. Adam Quark, the protagonist, tries to clean up rubbish in space by collecting "space baggies" with his dependable and eccentric team. Throughout its brief life, Quark lampooned science fiction works such as Star Wars, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Flash Gordon. Three of the episodes were direct parodies of episodes of Star Trek. Costume designer Grady Hunt was nominated for an Emmy Award for his work on the episode "All the Emperor's Quasi-Norms, Part 2." The DVD release of the whole series occurred on October 14, 2008.
