Porridge
Three series, two Christmas specials, and a film named Porridge aired on BBC1 from 1974 to 1977. Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale play inmates at HMP Slade in Cumbria. "Doing porridge" is British slang for serving a prison sentence; porridge was once the prison breakfast. Going Straight, a 1978 sequel, established that Fletcher wouldn't return to prison. In a 2004 BBC survey of the 100 best British sitcoms, Porridge ranked seventh.
