The legend of King Arthur is retold in the television miniseries Merlin, which first aired on television in 1998. The story is told from the point of view of the magician Merlin. The story, which features Sam Neill in the titular role, follows not just the birth and fall of Camelot but also the period in the fabled history of Britain that comes before it. The movie departs from more conventional interpretations of the legend in a number of significant ways, the most notable of which are the introduction of new characters like Queen Mab and the continuation of Merlin's role during King Arthur's whole reign over Britain. The film was followed by a sequel in 2006 titled Merlin's Apprentice, which had a connection to classic Arthurian legend in a more tangential fashion.
