Life on Mars is a crime drama based on science fiction that first aired on ABC from October9,2008, to April1, 2009. It is based on the BAFTA-winning BBC series of the same name from the UK. Kudos Film & Television, 20th Century Fox Television, and ABC Studios all worked together to make the series. The series tells the story of New York City police detective Sam Tyler, who wakes up in 1973 after being hit by a car in 2008. The series was somewhere between a thriller, science fiction, and a police procedural. Its main plot was unclear, and the main character didn't know what was going on. Harvey Keitel, Jonathan Murphy, Michael Imperioli, and Gretchen Mol were also in the series. Life on Mars was praised by critics for its premise, acting, and portrayal of the 1970s, but its viewership went down after its first episode and a two-month break. ABC said on March2,2009, that a second season would not be made. On September29,2009, a DVD box set of the whole series came out.
