Leave It to Beaver

Leave It to Beaver is an American situation comedy about a curious and often naive boy named Theodore "The Beaver" Cleaver and his adventures at home, at school, and around his suburban neighborhood. The show also featured Barbara Billingsley and Hugh Beaumont as Beaver's parents, June and Ward Cleaver, and Tony Dow as Beaver's brother, Wally. The show has become a cultural icon in the US, and the Cleavers have come to represent the idealized suburban family of the mid-20th century. Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher were the show's creators. These veterans of radio and early television got ideas for the show's characters, plots, and dialogue from the lives, experiences, and conversations of their own children. Leave It to Beaver is one of the first primetime sitcoms to be written from a child's point of view. Like a lot of dramas and comedies from the late 1950s and early 1960s, Leave It to Beaver shows how middle-class white American boys grew up. In a typical episode, Beaver got into some kind of trouble and then had to face his parents to be reprimanded and corrected. But neither parent was omniscient. In fact, the show often showed the parents arguing about how to raise their kids, and some episodes were based on parental mistakes.
