Homicide: Life on the Street

Homicide: Life on the Street is an American police procedural television series that follows a fictionalized version of the Homicide Unit of the Baltimore Police Department. It aired on NBC for seven seasons, from 1993 to 1999, and was followed by a TV movie, which also served as the series' de facto conclusion. The initial source material for the series was David Simon's book Homicide: A Year on the Killing Streets. Many of the characters and plots of the show were inspired on incidents described in the book, which also served as inspiration for Simon's own HBO series, The Wire. With his role of Frank Pembleton, Andre Braugher emerged as the series' standout star despite Homicide's ensemble cast. In 1996, 1997, and 1998, the show earned Television Critics Association Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Drama. In 1993, 1995, and 1997, it was also the first drama to win three Peabody Awards for best drama. The episode "Prison Riot" was named 32nd in TV Guide's list of the 100 greatest episodes of all time in 1997. In 2007, Time magazine named it one of the "Best TV Shows of All-TIME." TV Guide dubbed the series "The Best Show You're Not Watching" in 1996. The series ranked #46 on Entertainment Weekly's list of "New TV Classics."
