Swinging London, 1969. Ray Purbbs, helped by Alex, Jill, and Hugo, publishes the underground (counterculture) magazine Mouth from his Notting Hill Gate apartment. Ray believes he is (or may be) a crucial actor in the conflict between the Establishment and the alternative society. Alex embodies coolness, a man so laid-back that he appears to exist outside of reality, despite coming from an affluent background and being more interested in golf than in changing society. Jill enjoys the newfound freedoms allowed to her gender and professes to support free love, despite the fact that her 'lover' Ray has been deprived of her sexual passion for quite some time. Hugo's obfuscation is nearly magnificent in its obscurity. The group, led by Ray, jumps on every current bandwagon and fails to make the slightest difference in anything they undertake. The group is pretty inept at everything; they're not even particularly adept at being hippies.
