Food and Drink is a long-running British television series that airs on BBC Two. It was the first national television programme in the UK to cover the subject of food and drink without cooking or recipe demonstrations, airing from 1982 and 2002. The first series was presented by Simon Bates and Gillian Miles, and introduced Jilly Goolden in her first regular television appearances as the programme's wine expert. It was created in 1982 by BBC producer Henry Murray from an original idea by Jancis Robinson, Fay Maschler, and Paul Levy. Russell Harty offered filmed location reports from outstanding eateries across the United Kingdom. This series included the novel concept of a small contributing audience of 20 people dubbed "tasters and testers." The first series aired during the summer months but was an instant success, attracting an average audience of 1.5 million viewers each week, a strong rating for BBC Two during the summer of the 1980s. Chris Kelly and chef Michael Barry hosted later episodes, which included wine specialists Jilly Goolden and Oz Clarke. During the main show's summer vacation in 1987, a spin-off panel game, Food and Drink Summer Quiz, aired. Simon May composed the theme music. Michel Roux Jr and Kate Goodman co-hosted the return of Food and Drink to BBC Two on February4, 2013.
