A. J. Cronin's stories about the fictional Dr. Finlay served as inspiration for the British television series Doctor Finlay. As the name implies, it is a continuation of the popular BBC show, Dr. Finlay's Casebook. This story takes place in the 1940s, after John Finlay had returned from World War II. The new National Health Service and the modernization of the medical practice at Arden House, Tannochbrae, Scotland, are two early narratives. David Rintoul plays Dr. Finlay, Ian Bannen plays his semi-retired practice partner Dr. Cameron, and Annette Crosbie plays his maid Janet on the show. Finlay's new partner, Dr. Napier (Jessica Turner), and Finlay's assistant, Dr. Neil (Jason Flemyng), also play significant roles. Filming for the series took place in Auchtermuchty, Fife, Scotland, and was commissioned by Scottish Television. In the United States, it was broadcast on Masterpiece Theatre.
