Dante

Howard Duff portrayed Willie Dante, a former gambler who now runs Dante's Inferno, a nightclub located in San Francisco, California, in the short-lived NBC adventure/drama television series titled Dante. Co-starring alongside Alan Mowbray as Stewart Styles, the Maitre d', Tom D'Andrea as Biff, Dante's "man Friday," and Mort Mills as police Lieutenant Bob Malone were were notable actors. Dante insists that he has moved on from his troubled past, yet he has continued to keep Stewart and Biff as associates. Even if his club is legal, neither the law enforcement nor the organized crime syndicate believe that he is genuinely done with the criminal underworld. Dante's former partners in criminal activity keep making appearances at the club in an attempt to coerce him into returning to the criminal underworld. Dick Powell had previously portrayed Dante in eight episodes of his Four Star Playhouse. These episodes were initially written by Blake Edwards, who was also responsible for creating the radio drama Richard Diamond, Private Detective for Powell. Willie runs an illicit gambling enterprise out of the back room of the "Inferno," which the law enforcement quickly shut down. Mowbray was the only regular actor from the Four Star Playhouse production to be cast in the series as well. In the play, he had played a millionaire named Jackson who had gambled away his fortune, and in the series, he worked as one of Dante's waiters. Mowbray was the only actor to be cast in both the play and the series. Following their first airing, these episodes were repeated under the aggregate title The Best in Mystery.
