It has been running since 1 October1975, with over 500 episodes directed by Martin Scorsese, Alan Yentob, Roly Keating, Frederick Baker, Volker Schlondorff, and Vikram Jayanti, and has been voted one of the top 50 most influential programs of all time by major TV executives in Broadcast. From musicians Bob Dylan and Amy Winehouse to academics Edward Said and Eric Hobsbawm, from writers Jean Genet and V S Naipaul to artists Francis Bacon and Louise Bourgeois, Arena's subjects are a who's who of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
