Western China is scarred by civil war in the fifth century. Ti, a young scout, jumps through a crevice in the Zu mountains to avoid death, where he meets and becomes the apprentice of Ting Yin, a spiritual man with great fighting abilities. They come across a monk named Hsiao Yu, who is a great fighter and a good man, but is hostile to Ting. Because Ting and Hsiao are unable to collaborate, it falls to Ti to form a team with Hsiao's acolyte Yi Chen: they have 49 days to travel far to claim two swords that are the only weapons capable of defeating the Blood Demon, who has decided to wreak havoc on the world. Long Brows assists them, Ting falls in love with a countess, and the civil war continues.
