The criminal, Robert Hossein, wants to be like the American gangster John Dillinger. The inspector, Charles Aznavour, a childhood friend, is following him. There is a lot of gunplay and psychological tricks used to catch the killer. Stella, his girlfriend, is the only person who makes him feel anything (Virna Lisi). When the police close in on Dillinger, he kills several innocent people in a crowd during the shootout. When the man runs out of bullets, the mob decides to take matters into their own hands and ties a noose around his neck.
