Sian Anderson leaves her lover John in the secluded Greek town of Monemvassia for three weeks of rigorous writing. She is greeted upon her arrival at the ancient, deserted, walled-in fortress by Elias Appleby, the rotund eccentric landlord, who leads her down unknown underground corridors to the mansion where she will work. He cautions her to remain indoors at night due to the deadly gusts that approach after dark.
