After serving ten years in prison for nationalist activities, the Supreme Court of South Africa finally orders Shack Twala's release; nevertheless, he is forced to go into hiding almost immediately after being chased by the police following an altercation with them. Assisted by his attorney Rina Van Niekirk and a visiting British engineer named Jim Keogh, he makes his way to Capetown in the hopes of recovering a stash of diamonds that he had entrusted to a dentist prior to his incarceration in order to finance revolutionary activities. He had entrusted the diamonds to the dentist before he was arrested. They are followed the whole trip by Major Horn, who works for the South African State Security Bureau. It becomes clear that he has no intention of capturing them until they arrive at their final destination, but he continues to keep an eye on them.
