Matt Mills visits "The Board" of Satoshi-Telefair Industries, who thanks him for entering the Program. Mills accepts to volunteer under duress and with the prospect of being made to walk again. He's injected with a synthetic nanomaterial and smothered, then wakes up with restored leg function in a steel cell in The Wheel's first spoke. Assailants injure Mills' body and mind, but the synthetic nanomaterial heals his organs and strengthens him. The experiment may be designed to kill Mills, but he's determined to live - and to find his daughter before The Board does.
