It is the outbreak of WWII. France's south. Patricia, 18, is the eldest daughter of Pascal, a well-digger who regards her as a princess due to her moral characteristics. She is gentle and loyal. She briefly encounters Jacques, the son of Mazel, the proprietor of the business where her father purchases his stuff, one day. He's dashing and seductive. Felipe, a friend of her father's, expresses an interest in marrying her and asks her to an aviation show. She accepts his invitation just because she is aware of Jacques's pilot status and that he will be present.
