A young woman (Sandra Bullock) inexplicably vanishes, prompting her lover Jeff (Kiefer Sutherland) to embark on a years-long search to track down where she has gone. Even his newfound love (Nancy Travis) can't keep him from his compulsive hunt for the truth. Meanwhile, Jeff is stalked by the calculated psychopath (Jeff Bridges) who kidnapped his girlfriend, eventually leading Jeff through the exact identical actions that led to the incident. Jeff must put his own life in the hands of this cunning stranger in order to find out what happened.
