Gemma attempts to control her panic attacks with the assistance of ex-pharmacist Paul. Will antagonizes Paul and abruptly returns home because he is unable to hear his son in his own bedroom. Gemma has become completely dependent on Paul, who appears to be exhibiting real concern for her well-being. Gemma brings to the fore love, sadness, and the weakness of the human condition. Will and Paul become entangled in a downward spiral of psychological and ultimately physical violence.
