The Ugly American
Harrison MacWhite, a brilliant and outspoken scholar, fought off a difficult Senate confirmation hearing from conservatives to become ambassador to Sarkan, a southeast Asian country where civil strife is threatening a tenuous peace.. Despite his prior information, once he arrives, MacWhite perceives only a stark contrast between the United States and communism. He refuses to acknowledge that anti-American sentiment may be motivated by a desire for self-determination and nationality. Thus, he breaks away from his friend Deong, a local opposition leader, disregards a foreman's advise to slow down the construction of a road, and attempts to push the project forward. What price would the country and his friends be willing to pay in order for him to come to his senses?
