As the Allied troops close in on Paris in August 1944, German Colonel Von Waldheim is desperate to get all of France's most important paintings back to his homeland of Germany. Even as the chaos of retreat closes upon them, he is able to secure a train to deliver the priceless artworks to their destination. The French resistance, on the other hand, is determined to prevent them from seizing their national treasures, despite having received orders from London that they should not be destroyed. Laborche, the station master, is responsible for arranging the train and ensuring that everything runs properly, but he is also a member of a small gang of resistance fighters tasked with keeping the train from being stolen. He and his colleagues devise a complex ruse in order to prevent the train from ever leaving French territory.
