Holly Martins, a writer of pulp Westerns, arrives in the postwar city of Vienna, Austria, impoverished to be a guest of his childhood friend Harry Lime, only to hear that his friend has passed away. Martins comes up with a theory of a conspiracy after discovering that there was a "third man" present at the time of Harry's death, coming into conflict with the British officer Major Calloway, and falling head over heels in love with Harry's bereaved lover, Anna. All of these events contribute to Martins's confusion and lead to the development of his theory.
