The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

A famed actor's adoptive son, Kikunosuke Onoue, himself an actor who specializes in female roles in late nineteenth-century Tokyo, realizes that he is only recognized for his playing because he is his father's heir, rather than for his acting ability. He is devastated by this, and he seeks comfort from Otoku, a servant of his family, with whom he eventually falls in love. Kikunosuke gets resolved to leave home and pursue a career as an actor on his own merits, and Otoku follows him with unwavering devotion.
