The Seen and Unseen

Tantra and Tantri are inextricably intertwined. Tantri always receives the whites when they steal eggs from the family's sacrificial sacrifice, and Tantra always gets the yolks when they steal the eggs. Tantra, as well as the yolk, is missing one day, as is Tantra. Tantri's brother is very ill and in the hospital, and she begins to slide into wonderful parallel worlds as she prepares for the inevitable farewell through costumes, body paint, and dance performances. When Tantri's mother washes the paint off her face at one point in the film, it seems as if she is delicately dispelling the idea that things may continue as they are. Long dream sequences, set against the backdrop of the Balinese philosophy of sekala – what can be seen – and niskala – what cannot be seen – tell the story of one ten-year-old girl's struggle to cope with the loss of her mother.
