Marcellus is a tribune at the time of Christ. He is in charge of the group that is sent to crucify Jesus. After Jesus is crucified, he gets drunk and wins Jesus' hand-woven robe. After the event, he is tormented by nightmares and false beliefs. Even though he still doesn't believe in Jesus, he goes back to Palestine to try to learn as much as he can about the man he killed.
