Roy Fleming, played by Don Knotts, is the owner of a kiddie ride in a small town. He is deathly afraid of heights. Roy goes to Houston against his will when he finds out that his father has signed him up for the space program. When he gets there, he finds out that his job is as a janitor, not as an astronaut. Roy tries to keep his family and friends from finding out the truth about what he really does. He does this because he wants to live up to his controlling father's expectations. When NASA decides to send a regular person into space to prove that a new automated spacecraft is good enough, Roy gets the chance to face his fears.
