As a young man in the 1950s, John H. Groberg, a middle-class kid from Idaho Falls, crossed to become a Mormon missionary on a remote and exotic Tongan island kingdom in the Pacific Ocean. He leaves behind a family that loves him and the love of his life, Jean. "The girl back home" sends John letters and musings from across the world, and he reads them to keep his spirits up when things get tough. The Tongan people John has come to serve don't trust or love him because of language barriers, physical hardship, and long-standing distrust. John must work hard to earn their trust and love. During his three years on the islands, he meets people and learns things in the most unlikely places. When John H. Groberg goes on a trip to the islands, it will change his life for the rest of his life.
