At the end of the nineteenth century, the city of St. Petersburg was swept up in a flurry of interest in occult sciences and esotericism. Olivia Reed, a British medium, arrives in the Russian capital as part of a tour and draws large crowds to her spiritualistic meetings held in public spaces. During this time period, a series of ritualistic and inexplicable murders are taking place throughout the city. On the streets, young women are taken and their mangled bodies are discovered in various locations throughout the city. Rostov, a young police officer, and his subordinate Ganin are in charge of the inquiry. Things are becoming more and more perplexed with each new victim. Following the trail of suspicion, Rostov comes upon Olivia, whom he decides to turn to in the hopes that her true or imagined capacity to conjure the spirits of the dead may aid him in his pursuit of the perpetrator.
