John Mitchell, a test pilot, feels responsible for the fact that his efforts to provide a better life for his wife Mary and their two children do not appear to be successful, and he blames himself for this. Mitchell is going to put the company's brand new rocket-propulsion transport plane through its paces at the Conway Aero-Manufacturing Company in Wolverhampton while carrying two very important passengers in the plane with him: an official from the Ministry named Crabtree, and a buyer's representative named Ashmore. Mitchell learns from Reg Conway, his employer, that if Ashmore does not approve the plane, the company would go out of business, and Mitchell will be out of a job. This is due to the fact that the jet is not even insured, as the entire firm's capital is tied in with the plane. A fire breaks out in one of the aircraft's engines while it is in flight; all of the passengers and other crew members evacuate the aircraft, but Mitchell refuses to accept instructions to ditch the aircraft in the Irish Sea.
