The Last Days on Mars

After completing the first manned Mars trip, a member of Tantalus Base's crew discovered what he thinks to be fossilized bacterial life. Not content to let the relief crew have all the attention, he defies orders to leave and embarks on his own trip to gather more samples. When the permeable ground cracks and he falls into a deep crevice, he is on the brink of death. Their heartbroken coworkers make desperate attempts to find his body. As a result, they begin to think that the life-form they have uncovered isn't completely harmless.
