The Journey of August King is a multi-dimensional play about a North Carolina farmer in the year 1815, set in the Carolinas. August King, a widower, is on his way home, as he does every year after selling his fruit and acquiring the stock and commodities he would need to survive the winter. August is a widower who has been widowed for over a year. In the course of his travels, he stumbles across a runaway slave, a young lady of about 19 years old, and August King must decide whether to break the law and assist this slave in achieving freedom, or whether to abandon her to be hunted down and eventually returned to her slave master.
