Hugo Archibald is a veterinarian who collects unusual animals. His latest pet is a monkey named Jennie. Dr. Archibald is rarely home, and Andrew feels ignored. And Lea, his wife, feels Jennie is trouble. But the kids love her right away. Jennie is special in that she is studying sign language. In time, Jennie becomes a close friend of Dr. Archibald's son, Andrew. Jennie shares Andrew's interests in baseball and comic books. When Andrew and his father disagree, Jennie is there for him. Dr. Pamela Prentiss joins Jennie's training. She disapproves of Jennie's care and is considered impolite by the Archibalds.
