For the first time ever, J.J. is a black sheriff's department rookie. Some of J.J.'s coworkers are hostile toward him because of the department's history of racial strife. In the all-male workplace, his only real friend is the other new trooper, who is the first female officer to join the force. Police corruption comes to light during the trial of Teddy Woods, the man J.J. arrested. He has to make hard choices and risk his own life in the name of justice, but he does it for everyone else.
