A young girl is brought up in a family that is continuously on the run from the FBI while the family itself is unstable. She matures while living in abject poverty under the guidance of her alcoholic and inventive father, who tells her fantastic tales to keep her mind off the family's precarious financial situation, and her self-centered and nonconformist mother, who has no intention of having any more children despite having four children of her own, including her younger brother and sister, as well as her other older sister.
