Marisa Paredes is Leocadia ("Leo") Macias, a woman who writes "pink" romance novels under the pen name Amanda Gris, which are extremely popular all across Spain and are portrayed by Marisa Paredes in the film. She has had a tumultuous love life, in contrast to the romantic stories she has written about. In her marriage, Leo and her husband Paco, a military soldier stationed in Brussels and then in Bosnia and Herzegovina, have a strained relationship since he is both physically and emotionally distant.
