Jimmy Rabbitte just got out of school and has a great idea: to start a soul band in Barrytown, his slum neighborhood in north Dublin. First, he needs musicians and singers. Things slowly start to come together when he finds three good-voiced women practically in his back yard, a lead singer (Deco) at a wedding, and an older trumpet player named Joey "The Lips" Fagan who answered his ad.
