In this fictional story, which takes place in a remote Welsh village in the 14th century, the main character, Alice, is a sixteen-year-old girl who is accused of being a witch and of being responsible for the outbreak of the plague that has killed many people in the village, including Alice's own father. After it is discovered that Alice has been covering up her mother's infection, she is made to watch while The Cleanser, a sinister entity who wears a mask, murders her mother in a particularly violent manner. Tom, the town preacher and de facto leader, has designs for Alice, and after she rejects his advances, he puts her through five agonizing tests in order to break her will. She manages to escape the night before her execution with the assistance of Mary, a friend of her mother's, and goes into the forest, where she finds the hidden hut of a mystery healer, who has his own dark past and demons to face. Mary also helps her escape. He tends to her physical needs and then instructs her on how to seek retribution against people who have wronged her in the past.
